This week I wish to highlight the growth of the locality’s Micro Pub – an alternative type of drinking destination, usually a small free house, devoid of musical entertainment, Sky TV, fizzy lager and gaming machines. It’s a social hub where conversation is paramount.

These type of establishments appear to be opening in most of our local towns – and it leads me to believe that our social drinking habits could be changing.

Villagers in Thorngumbald have been campaigning to save the Royal Mail pub after proposals to turn it into a Co-Operative store were revealed.

But planning permission was granted last month, prompting campaigners to look for an alternative place to sup pints.

Now, Paul Smith, licensee of the Royal Mail pub, has submitted plans to turn a former sorting office in the village into a Micro Pub.

PLANS have emerged to open a Micro Pub at Durham railway station.

Middlesbrough-based James Nicoll has applied for planning permission to open The Dunelm Tap in a storage area on the northbound platform.

Drinks would be served from noon to 10pm, seven days a week; and the existing waiting room would be rearranged to provide access to the new bar.

The plans for the building, in Rowan Yard on Billingham Road, have been met with overwhelming support from real ale drinkers.

The existing building originally dates back to the mid-18th century where it formed part of a blacksmiths yard and a coach/stabling house.

Over the years the building has seen many of its original features altered and its condition is now described as “poor” on the planning application.

But Neal Gray, behind the plans and who already runs The Green Hops Micro Pub in Billingham, has a trump card up his sleeve.

IT is probably the most secure beer in Hampshire.

A new Micropub has opened on the site of a former Southampton bank – and where better to store the beer than the safe.

The venue which is just 65 square metres is located in Shirley Road and called Overdraft Craft Ale Beer.

The 110-year-old building where it is housed is a former Natwest Bank and Mr Rai has kept some of the sites heritage alive.

The plan was the brainchild of beer and real ale enthusiast Amrik Rai, 55, from Shirley, who hopes it will be a huge hit with punters.

The growing Micro pub scene in Chorley and the surrounding area in general has been supported.

The application for what used to be Parky’s Sandwich Bar has been sent in to the council by a Michael Barker.

If it gets the go ahead it will join nearly Shepherd’s Hall Ale House, Chapel Street; Bob Inn, Chorley Market and newly opened Cockt’Alehouse, Eccleston – Chorley’s band of Micro pubs.

A new real and craft ale micropub has been planned for Harrogate’s town centre.

If approved by Harrogate Borough Council, the new ale bar will be built on the vacant Cheltenham Crescent site, opposite Le Bistrot Pierre.

The bar will stock a wide range of local and international ales with the developer hoping to ‘champion craft ales from local producers’

Two teachers have taken inspiration from the classroom and mixed it with booze to create a new educational ale house in Stoneygate.

Steven Tabbernor, 40, from Clarendon Park, and Ian Martin, 41, from Rutland, are hoping to bring real ale-ducation to the masses with a new micropub set to open next month.

The Real Ale Classroom, in Allandale Road, was successfully granted a liquor licence last week and now the race is on fit out the unit in time for Christmas.

The compact bar will stock a selection of beers, ciders, stouts, ales and perrys from around Leicestershire – as well as bordering counties – with educating drinkers on the finer points of locally brewed booze as its main aim.
